Dugout

  • Representational Building

  • Replicated in 2020

This structure is typical of the first homes in many settlements. These temporary dwellings were usually dug into the sloping section of a trail, river bed, or hillside, preferably facing south to capture sun in the winter. Construction materials varied by region, but walls were built with logs, dirt, stone, or brick. Roofs were made of brush, reeds, willow, and saplings and covered with dirt or sod. Doors were made out of whatever was available, from animal skins to wagon covers and used lumber.
